Since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York State has maintained a strict moratorium on evictions out of concern for the many renters in the state who lost income during the shutdown and fell behind on rent. The moratorium ends on January 15th and the state's fund for pandemic rent relief is out of money. What's next--families evicted from their homes during the coldest time of the year? A massive increase in homelessness during a surge in the COVID pandemic? Is there another way forward? How should faith communities that include both renters and landlords respond?
Our lead presenter will be Ellen Davidson who is a Staff Attorney at the Legal Aid Society and an expert in local, state and federal policy related to housing and homelessness. Pastor Paul Sweet from Christ Church UMC in Troy, NY will offer a faith response and then we'll open the floor for questions and conversation. Please join us!
The State Street Forum on Faith and Public Life is a joint initiative of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, the New York State Council of Churches and the FOCUS Churches of Albany. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for people of faith to deepen our understanding of a current issue, reflect on that issue from a faith perspective and commit to taking concrete action in response to what we've learned.
