Patriotism is good. Faith is good.
Yet even on Independence Day, they are not the same thing, and they should never be blended and abused to become tools of empire, theocracy, or right-wing oppression.
This Fourth of July, Faithful America is launching our second-annual "Preach and Pray to Confront Christian Nationalism" event against Christian nationalism. On Sunday, June 30, and Sunday, July 7, hundreds of Christian preachers across the country will take a stand against the hijacking of our faith.
Take the pledge to Preach or Pray against Christian nationalism during whichever Sunday service your church plans to mark the Fourth of July -- whether that's June 30 or July 7 -- and Faithful America will send you helpful liturgical and lectionary resources to aid you in this work.
Together, we will reject hatred, political violence, Christofascism, and the hijacking of Jesus's name for partisan politics -- and in their place take a prophetic, Christ-like stance for peace, faith, hope, and love.
(If you are not a preacher or worship leader who can make this decision for your congregation, please forward this email to the person who can.)
With public officials at all levels of government twisting Christ's name to undermine democracy and the rule of law, threaten political violence, attack equal rights, and strip away religious freedom from non-evangelicals -- all with the blessing of far-right pastors and televangelists -- Christian nationalism has become the single biggest threat to both democracy and the church today.
It's time to collectively confront this hijacking of our faith, and together renew the church's prophetic role in building a more free and just society.
If inclusion in your sermon is unrealistic that Sunday for whatever reason, it would be wonderful if you could consider including extra prayers during the service instead. This is an alternative way of using the church's prophetic voice, while also harnessing the spiritual power of prayer.
We will send helpful sermon resources, including for lectionary preachers, as well as sample written prayers to everyone who signs up at the link above.
