Better Reentry Advocacy Day

Details:

Better Reentry Advocacy Day in Albany

Tuesday, March 4, 2025

In New York State, more than 9,000 individuals are released from custody annually with “gate money.” A meager amount consisted of commissary and prison wages, not to exceed $200 - this amount has never been enough to meet an individual’s most basic needs.

Directly impacted leaders, loved ones and community members from all across the state are gathering on March 4th to tell New York lawmakers to pass the Reentry Assistance Bill.

If passed, then instead of commissary residuals, eligible individuals would receive stipends of $425 each month for up to six (6) months, subject to inflation. Rather than (maybe) being able to meet one’s basic needs for a day, this guaranteed income will provide dignity, increase stability, reduce recidivism, improve communities & strengthen families.

At a time of increasing economic hardship, we are calling on the state of New York to reform gate money, as we can no longer afford not to. It’s time for #BetterReentryNOW.

Transportation, meals, materials, training and swag will be provided.
