Did you know that in the United States 295,000 people die each year from the crisis of poverty and low wealth? Is this an acceptable statistic in the richest country in the world?
This is why we are calling on candidates for public office in 2024 (and beyond) to endorse a moral public policy agenda that will expand democracy to all people and put an end to the crisis of death by poverty and low wealth.
To that end, we are joining the Mass Poor People's and Low-Wage Workers' Assembly and Moral March on Washington D.C. on Saturday, June 29, 2024!
This will be an historic assembly of impacted poor and low-wage workers, representatives from over thirty state coordinating committees, leaders from major religious organizations and denominations, labor unions, and other advocates.
The NYS PPC is organizing buses from several locations throughout New York. Click here to reserve your seat!
Whether or not you plan to take a NYS PPC bus, please also RSVP on the event page here: www.poorpeoplescampaign.org/mm2024/
On June 29th we will also be launching four months of outreach to 15 million poor and low-wage infrequent voters. We will be waking the Sleeping Giant, that is, the 34 million eligible low wage people who did not vote in the last election. The voting power of the poor, if awakened and activated, will give voice to the reality of poverty in this, the richest country in the world. Our voting as united poor people will be a reminder that poverty is the fourth leading cause of death in this country.
The collective votes of low income, low wage people will alert and awaken politicians to the fact that the poor will not be silent anymore. Registering to vote and filling the ballot boxes at the polls will be proof that we have awakened this sleeping giant. And it will awaken us to what power we have when we stand together. Learn more about how the PPC is working to awaken the Sleeping Giant by watching this NYS PPC video from May 9th, 2024.
Forward together!
