The recent presidential election may have left many of us feeling a range of emotions—disappointment, anger, sadness, uncertainty, fear, and maybe even hope, love and concern for our collective well-being. The challenges we’ll face as a nation can feel overwhelming, and that’s because it is! Fighting for justice is no easy feat and last week’s news illuminated the urgent need for a bold commitment to solidarity and the reimagination of a world that works for all of us.
Long before the results, our AMOS committee—Long Island Jobs with Justice’s faith, community, and labor committee—began planning a conference to bring us together around the theme of building a just economy for all. Now, more than ever, this vision is needed.
For people of faith, and all those who stand for justice, these moments demand action. We are called to defend the core principle we have committed to throughout our lives: "justice for all." But we know that for true “justice for all” to be a reality, people’s material conditions must change. Too many are struggling to make ends meet—working long hours for low wages, and living in constant fear of losing access to basics like food, shelter, and health care.
The next four years will continue to test us—our unity, our solidarity, and our ability to fight for justice. We must continue the fight to build a Long Island where justice is not just an aspiration but a lived reality! A Long Island where all people have access to living wages and jobs with dignity. A Long Island where economic and social decisions are driven by the needs of working people and not just greedy profiteers and power mongering. A Long Island where workers and their families can thrive, not just survive!
We hope you can join us at the December 5th conference, “Repairers of the Breach: How People of Faith and Community Partners Can Build a Just Long Island Economy.” We will gather at St. Hugh of Lincoln Church in Huntington Station from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM to discuss how we can put the principles of justice for all into practice, and how we can work together to build an economy that is inclusive, equitable, and just.
The conference will bring together faith leaders, community advocates, and economic justice activists in two plenary sessions and eleven breakout discussions that will address critical questions, including:
The 2024 election is not just a political moment—it is a call to action. Let’s come together in solidarity on December 5th, and continue to build a just, inclusive, and worker-centered economy for Long Island, and for the generations that will come after us.
