Rikers Island is a disaster that leaves incarcerated people at daily risk of harm and death. Since Mayor Adams took office, at least 33 people have died in the custody of the Department of Correction. On Wednesday, the Federal Courts are holding a hearing to see if the City will be held in contempt for failing to improve conditions at Rikers. The Katal Center is organizing the Shut Rikers March and Rally to make clear that until Rikers is closed, the federal courts must appoint a receiver to improve current conditions and save the lives of individuals who are incarcerated. After gathering at City Hall, the march will hold a rally at Foley Square.
