Ban CO2 Fracking

A company called Southern Tier CO2 to Clean Energy Solutions wants to drill for gas in the Southern Tier by injecting CO2 in the shale pockets to extract methane and transporting it for use in new gas fired power plants.  The company has not officially applied for a permit from the state for this method of gas extraction, but they have created a website, reached out to many landowners for leases, hosted several public presentations and been quoted in the press. 

This proposed drilling technique is dangerous and must be banned.

Carbon Sequestration-Enhanced Gas Recovery aka CO2 Fracking is dangerous and does not reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It perpetuates it by:

·        Requiring more and more land dedicated to drilling, production, processing, pipelines to procure and transport methane etc.

·        Creating more and more CO2 that must be piped and sequestered.

·        Misallocating tens of billions being spent on this false solution instead of the transition to renewables and other real climate solutions.

·        Requiring CO2 pipelines planned for storage and transport which are being approved across the country.

·        Jeopardizing public lands being considered forCO2 storage. The US Forestry service is currently considering CO2 storage on our federal park lands.

·         New York passed the groundbreaking Climate Leadership and Communities Protection Act(CLCPA). Any type of drilling for gas in New York would be a step in the wrong direction away from this path.
